How to do manual alti-aliasing in Photoshop?

I need to smooth out some rough edges for a project I’m working on, but that doesn’t seem to be working. I heard about doing it manually, but I don’t know how to do it. Without the process, it’s just pure black graphics with a white background.
When I have selected portions of an image that need some jagged edges removed, I sometimes use the smudge tool with the image zoomed in and the brush set to a small radius .
